Position a PIM to be read

The USB Reader and Remote Control read best when pointing directly toward the PIM.  For maximum read range, the PIM should be placed so that it is facing the reader, as shown in the first image below.  In this orientation, the read range is approximately 4-5 feet (see Technical Specs).  The second image shows that PIMs can be read from the edge with a read range of approximately 6-12 inches.
